As of today, I am officially unemployed. I turned in my badge, my parking pass, and my equipment (laptop, Blackberry, etc.), and had my exit interview yesterday afternoon. I left armed with my final paycheck, the balance of my vacation bank, and my final expense check (which, thankfully, came in just under the wire). My bank is loving me these days while I shop for a more equitable account for my severance (a majority of which I already have in the form of my retention bonus, with the remainder to be doled out bi-weekly as soon as I sign the release papers). If anyone knows of a good financial planner in the NYC area, please feel free to send on any referals. I'm looking for someone affiliated with a larger firm, at least to start, but willing to consider other options.
I've started looking more closely at Manhattan real estate listings. They're pretty encouraging. I might even be able to afford a one-bedroom, although I am looking mostly at studios. I'd rather live in a smaller place with a better location than the other way around. Yeah, rents are steep, but not really any more so than San Francisco.
