Let me say something about PG&E, for the Bay Area folks. If you think they're a bit of a rip-off, they've got *nothing* on Con Edison Power.
I received my power bill today. It's my lowest to date, actually, since there was little air conditioning involved. More than $30 of that was just the monthly service fees, etc. Yes, approximately %60 of my bill was just basic upkeep, not my KWH usage or anything of that sort. There were times my entire PG&E bill for my 2-bedroom house was only $20! Thank goodness my landlord pays the gas. I can only imagine a $35 bill just for the once a week I use my stove to actually cook.

Today ended surprisingly well at work. I walked in to chaos. The system we needed for our final usability testing and to be used for some very high-profile demos the next few days was down. The code fix went in smoothly overnight, but our data center had lost connectivity. We didn't know when it would be back up. There was a lot to do before tomorrow morning. I quickly altered any mental plans to stay as late as possible and follow up early morning if necessary. My boss approached us with the same plea a few moments later (of course I would stay!). Big panic was starting to spread. There were contingency plans upon contingency plans on how to move forward and recreate what was needed by morning. Oh, I should mention our team was also short one person for the day. Ordinarily, totally fine.
Thankfully, by noon everything was up and we were back in business. At 4:58. I sent the final piece needed to the technical team. I walked out the door at 4:10. As a reward for a day that ended up far more smoothly than planned, I took the ferry home (faster, if I meet the schedule, which I did). I now have an unexpected evening in, all to myself. Sweet. I'm going to heat up some dinner, finish my book, and enjoy listening to the rain storm I narrowly escaped from the dry side of the windows.
