Get a Job

I found the local hub here in the neighborhood yesterday-- post office, proper large grocery store, good drugstore, a few new restaurants, etc. Prior to that, I'd only seen the bodegas and delis on every corner, in addition to a couple sliceries and Chinese takeout (bleh). While convenient, they're not exactly enough to stock proper nutritious food. This center is all just a few blocks away, too. Very nice.

This weekend should prove interesting. They're not running the C train on weekends through beginning of May due to maintenance. Yep, I'm along the C line (subway). Figures that the maintenance is through two stops beyond mine. They're running shuttle buses, so we'll see just how convenient those might be. Sounds like a pain in the butt. I may just stick to Brooklyn for the weekend. Thankfully, HopStop (brilliant transit info) has included the maintenance in its directions. I love HopStop. It's smarter than your average subway map! And with my snazzy new phone, I can use it remotely if I ever need to (unless I'm underground, of course, haha).

I finally got a good amount of solid rest the past couple days. Yesterday was pretty productive as I finally made a bunch of phone calls, sorted through some papers, closed a few accounts, etc. Up until then I felt about 5 minutes away from an anxiety attack at all times. I'm feeling more like 10 minutes away now, so it's an improvement :)

I'm missing some papers I need to secure an apartment. I thought I had them, but I don't. I sent off a request to my former employer, though. And I'll have local checks as of Monday. I also have some job leads to follow up on next week. I allowed myself a week to get my stuff in order and let myself absorb the myriad of changes. I needed it, but time to get moving ahead soon. I'll admit, though, that it's nice not to *need* a job right away.

I entered my resume, as a condition of Unemployment, on both the California and New York job boards. The process is a bit amusing, like they know it's just a formality. I would never count on either site to find myself a job (thankfully, I know of *good* job search sites/tools). You can't upload an existing resume, which I can kind of understand. When you enter the info, however, they have ridiculously-low character limits. So, basically, my resume according to both states is "Um, yeah, I had a job, I was good, hire me". Silly. I think the state should hire me as a Business Analyst to get it done right ;)

I'm going to post to more job search sites later. I uploaded to DICE and Monster weeks ago, but need to expand my search now that I'm actually unemployed and can focus more on landing a good position. I don't want to resort to temping at the moment. I'd rather focus on finding something more lucrative and interesting. While there's nothing wrong with temping, it's not exactly well-paying and it can be a time hog while looking for something good. It's always an option down the line.
