Baby it's Cold Outside

It's 29 degrees out. My California butt noticed the cold. Really, though, it was perfectly tolerable, especially since I was traveling by subway.

The latest learned item, however, is that very cold weather is a bad time to wear earrings. They make for some very cold ears (and neck, if dangly, as these were)! I think I actually may have known that when skiing a lot and spending more time in the snow, but I'd completely forgotten that little nugget of wisdom until out and about tonight, noticing my scarf wasn't exactly high enough to keep my ears from freezing off.

It was in the 60s yesterday, so I didn't quite expect such a drastic shift. Live and learn. Fortunately, the rest of me is staying decently warm.

Some friends and I went and saw Uta Lemper at Joe's Pub. Man, does she put on a good show! She had a really good trio, too. She's far more cabaret than jazz, but I think even my most snobbish of jazz friends (and I'll admit I count myself among them, as well) would have loved some of the stuff she was doing.

It was a mix of German (of course), French and English. She has such amazing range, not just physical notes, but timbre, tone and emotion. I was really impressed with her lack of overt vibrato, which can be a downfall of many cabaret artists.

I was tempted to stay out even later, maybe hit a jam session or two, as it's rare I can stay up so late, but I decided against it. The warmth and comfort of my apartment was far too tempting. The friends I was with went on to a party, but I wasn't feeling it. It wasn't really my scene, so I popped back uptown on my own.
